“Wolfe” was Wolfie Gunthal the happiest man to ever set foot on the racecourse, even more joyous than Max Cocks whose smile when Eduardo was on the boil for Joe Pride out shone Luna Park. Wolfie was a character the like of who we will never see again. Another correspondent Shane Montgomery rekindled memories of trainers George Hanlon and Jack Clayton, rare experiences. Maybe I should compile a list of my 10 Hall Of Turf Fame Characters encompassing trainers, jockeys, punters, bookmakers, strappers, and urgers. In my opinion “character” was best formed during The Depression and World Wars when people survived on their wits and not what was fed to them on a screen.
